“Forever Chemicals”

(revised January 29, 2026)

Definition

Forever Chemicals are often referring to a group of chemicals commonly known as PFAS which stands for perfluoroalkyl and/or polyfluoroalkyl substances, and these chemicals are designed to be very stable which is desirable if you’re trying to manufacture a durable product.  The problem is that these durable chemicals don't breakdown easily either naturally in the environment or your body according to some research.

Use

These chemicals are used for a variety of things including firefighting foam and water resistant clothing …..but they're also used to make some of your non-stick pans. These same PFAS chemicals are also found in take out food containers, microwave popcorn bags, it can even be on your dental floss.  So keep a lookout on your labels!

And last, there are literally tens, maybe even hundreds of ‘forever chemicals’ in use for other purposes, and they’re not all categorized as PFAS. So do your homework!

Concern

PFAS are used in many products, and because of their wide use, they are found in the blood of humans. Also, because they don’t break down quickly, there is concern that they may continue to build up and accumulate in your body and cause adverse health effects.   Some links being researched include:

  • Affecting hormones

  • thyroid problems

  • increased risk of certain cancers

  • liver damage

What we recommend…….

First, avoid using non-stick pans for high heat cooking.

Second, if there is any sign of the pan being scratched or breaking down, it goes in the trash.

And third, try to use good old fashion cast iron pans or a good quality ceramic pan.  They often cost a little more, but we think its worth it.

There are some that support using stainless steal pans as an alternative.  Probably not a bad option, but we try to avoid using them at high heat or for cooking highly acidic foods as that may cause the pan to leach nickel and chromium.
